Palin A Knockout!

In what may be a shocking development to some, GOP Presidential candidate John McCain selected Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate. While much of the country may not be familiar with Palin, for those of us who are, we can certainly understand why John McCain chose this mother of five and I am thrilled by the pick.

Palin has been front and center in the energy discussion, frequently appearing on The Glen Beck Program and CNBC's Kudlow and Company. No one has stated the case publicly louder for Palin than CNBC's Larry Kudlow, a former Reagan economic advisor.

Palin is quite an impressive individual, and since energy is topic A on the political landscape these days, Palin is a home run choice. I think this decision left the Obama camp struggling for footing. You want change and a breath of fresh air? You got it!

FOX Business Babe Alexis Glick (our favorite) is just learning about Palin and discussed her with Weekly Standard Managing Editor Bill Kristol. Kristol "gets it".

Although Palin is a bit shy on the experience front, she is much more qualified than Barack Obama. Please see the following link from RedState.com for a mind boggling "Tale of the Tape" http://www.redstate.com/diaries/redstate/2008/aug/30/tale-of-the-tape-sarah-palin-vs-barack-obam/

Drill, Drill, Drill!

Hurricane Warning

Certainly, our prayers are with the fine people of the Louisiana as they prepare for the arrival of what appears to be a very dangerous Hurricane Gustav.

As we prepare for Gustav and in the aftermath of the debacle of Hurricane Katrina, the air needs to be cleared.

None of these events are the fault of George W. Bush. The audacity of morons who hung out in a city below sea level during a hurricane of the ages to look past their idiotic decision making and the failure of the state and local governments to place blame on Bush and the FEDS is ridiculous. What part of get out did they not understand? And if you stayed, you are responsible for your own actions. Notice we did not have the same issues in Mississippi, which was also devastated.

After Hurricane Charley ran right through downtown Orlando, we all fired up the chain saws and went to work. No one was waiting for Dick Cheney to come by with some Gatorade.

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin is borderline incompetent, but he was easily re-elected. My crack staff could not verify if he is hanging out on the 20th floor of the chocolate city Holiday Inn again. These residents re-elected him, so it is what it is. He already has called Gustav "The storm of the century". You know from experience that the buses are a no go, so your prompt response to evacuation warnings are quite important.

Good luck to all of you and shoot the looters. By the way, LSU looked good yesterday! GEAUX TIGERS!

There Is No Place Like Nebraska

Dear Lord, the battles we go through life,
We ask for a chance that's fair
A chance to equal our stride,
A chance to do or dare

If we should win, let it be by the code,
Faith and Honor held high

If we should lose, we'll stand by the road,
And cheer as the winners go by

Day by Day, we get better and better!
Til' we can't be beat...
Won't Be Beat!

Go BIG RED!

Kick It Off!

Arrogance On The Loose

That was some spectacle I caught out of the corner of my ear last night at Invesco Field. It certainly was not about him, Obama proclaimed as his logo stood boldly on his flanks. BHO is leading the way as the only presidential contender ever with his own logo!

It is clear Obama thinks America is not the greatest country, as he told us how he would make us that again. Again? And, with so many people out of work (we are actually near full employment and at hsitorically low unemployment rates) I am amazed how many Americans obviously agree with his socialist beliefs.

As he aims to move us to become the new Soviet Union, this from Glenn Beck:

2008 Florida State Seminoles Preview

OFFENSE

Much of the problem with Florida State over the past several years is getting average play from the quarterback position. Say what you will about Jeff Bowden, but until Jimbo arrived, the offense centered around quality quarterbacking and is just has not been there.

At this time, it appears, although the battle is close, Drew Weatherford has not been unseated and will start. Both Christian Ponder and DVontrey Richardson will also play.

Weatherford, who did improve from ’06 to ’07, needs to continue his progression and play like a signal caller with 34 starts under his belt. Although he improved in the turnover department, this season needs to see much more progress in the area of points production. Managing the game properly and not turning it over is great, but you need points to win.
There are many weapons to work with. RB Antone Smith has been very pedestrian since he came to FSU as a big time recruit. He has impressed in preseason camp, so maybe a breakout season is on the way. Some newcomers at the position appear poised to push Smith. Another player who has been sleepwalking around but has lit it up in camp is WR Greg Carr. Carr is a superstar in the making, and if he is committed and ready to go, lookout. Additionally, Preston Parker is an electric player who can do just about everything. Big things are expected from him, and he can deliver. There are some young players here with much promise, and one who will see plenty of action is Corey Surrency. He looks like he cannot be kept off the field.

The line is a concern, primarily due to depth issues. The starting five will be pretty good. Joe Tonga is playing a key role as a newcomer at tackle, but he has fit in nicely according to coaches. Ryan McMahon and Rodney Hudson are standout players, so if this unit can stay healthy, they will only get better and will be among the best in the conference by seasons end and for years to come.

DEFENSE

As usual, ole Mickey Andrews will put a stellar group on the field. Last year, the unit wore down due to the offensive lack of production, but this season we expect much better results from the O. There is increased depth in all areas and Andrews bunch should be particularly strong in the secondary, just how he likes it.

Everette Brown is a player who could have a big year. He has flashed brilliance at times, and if he can keep the motor going, a big season awaits for him. Newcomer Markus White is expected to help on the other side, and the tackles with Bud Thacker and Paul Griffin are strong.

The linebacking core is again a strong spot for the Seminoles. Derek Nicholson is an honors candidate while Dekoda Watson is very good as well. Toddrick Verdell is holding on the weakside as frosh Nigel Bradham, accurately described as a beast, pushes for a starting spot. Bradham will play regardless, and he could blossom into something special. There are solid backups in Kendall Smith, Recardo Wright and others, including a freshman trio of Nick Moody, Vince Williams and Nigel Carr.

The secondary should be a real strength. Tony Carter is no Deion, but he is very good and could breakout as a senior. Patrick Robinson anchors the other side and there are quality backups, like Michael Ray Garvin, so rotation is back in business. Myron Rolle needs to step up his game as he was expected to All ACC at a minimum by now. Jamie Robinson and Darrius McClure are solid at free safety.

After the suspensions, this unit is talented and deep, so it will be tough going for opponents, particularly if they get support from the offense.

INTAGIBLES

The schedule is a friend of the Seminoles in ’08. FSU leaves the state just three time and catches all highly ranked opponents at home. This is the second season with Fisher and the talent and depth have improved. The offense should be much improved, and that can only strengthen an already stout D.

HONORS CANDIDATES

WR Preston Parker is an outstanding player and should be an All ACC selection. Greg Carr could be an All American if he steps up, and he is apparently doing just that in fall camp. Everett Brown potentially is All ACC and so is Rodney Hudson on the offensive line. Academic All America SS Myron Rolle can claim honors on the field if can realize his potential.

NEW ARRIVALS

The Seminoles have an extremely young and woefully thin offensive line, so for FSU to secure a recruit who can become an immediate starter up front is a tremendous development. Joe Tonga has been as advertised in preseason camp. Nigel Bradham certainly someone Mickey Andrews is very high on and Markus White could find himself in a starting role on the defensive line. Offensively, wideout Corey Currency continues to turn heads and will be a major factor in the fall while Jarmon Fortson could contribute as well. There are few running backs that could well end up in the mix, including Ty Jones and Tavares Pressely.

FINAL ANALYSIS

Everything sets up for the Seminoles to threaten to win the ACC Championship and head to a BCS bowl. Due to these suspensions, the third game with Wake Forest in Tally is critical. Wake is no slouch, so it will take a well played game to take them down. With so much at stake and time to prepare, I cannot see the ‘Noles dropping this game. Undefeated heading to face a down Miami, who we gave a game a year ago, seems much less daunting with the ‘Canes playing in Pro Player rather than the O-Bowl, where they had a significant home field advantage. Virginia Tech and Clemson come calling with BC and Maryland on the road. All are winnable. Then the Gators. Although I do think the ball could heavily bounce in the favor of FSU, I am projecting a loss somewhere, maybe at Maryland, and falling just short of a powerful Florida team. I think FSU wins the ACC and finishes 11-2 and should be really clicking for a BCS bowl.

All You Zombies Show Your Faces

Political junkie that I am, I have been watching the Democratic National Convention with great interest and it has just been terrific entertainment.

Most of the media outlets are just gushing with the thought King Barack ascending to the throne. Over at media headquarters, MSNBC, Olbermann and Matthews are cat fighting in their support. Others marvel at Obama, some fainting and some crying. His majesty graces cover after cover of the weekly magazines such as Time and Newsweek. I can't remember more accolades on a cover boy with so little to back it up since Kansas City Royal baseball phenom Clint Hurdle appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

With all the Dems eagerly backing such a novice, you wonder if they are cast under a spell, or are lemmings, or ZOMBIES!

Gator Playbook

From Heavy Soul

Our crack investigative team has obtained a copy of the Florida Gator playbook, which, in it's simplicity and much to my dismay, is clicking along nicely these days.
Unfortunately, FSU has been a bit short handed out there where Peter Boulware, Chris Cowart, Reinard Wilson and ole Sam Cowart used to disrupt the Gator pitch and catch. Maybe Everette Brown can become a disruptor!

2008 Nebraska Cornhuskers Preview

OFFENSE

At the close of 2007, behind quarterback Joe Ganz, Nebraska was lighting up the scoreboard. In three starts, Ganz threw for 1399 yards and 15 touchdowns leaving many to wonder how he had not won this job in the fall. Outside of the loss of a pair of leading receivers and an offensive lineman, the Cornhuskers return plenty of firepower on offense. Four lineman with a combined 67 starts are back led by tackle Lyndon Murtha and guard Matt Slauson. Jaivorio Burkes is a very talented sophomore who could emerge as an honors candidate. Versatile back Marlon Lucky, the leading rusher and receiver of 2007, returns and could really have a great season. Lucky will be pushed for playing time as Roy Helu, who has turned many a head on the staff and Quentin Castille, who has the tools to really become an explosive factor, showcase their talents. There is some work to do on the four deep at wide receiver but steady players Todd Peterson and Nate Swift return. Among those looking to step up are Niles Paul and Menelik Holt.

DEFENSE

After an abysmal 2007, this unit can get no worse. This is Pelini’s strong suit and I do expect marked improvement on this side of the ball. Up front, ’07 was a disaster with no a hint of a pass rush. Zach Potter and Barry Turner can play, and expect Pelini to turn both of them loose. DT Ndamakong Suh completely disappeared a year ago, but he has new life under this staff and could realize his potential. Ty Steinkuhler and the surprising emergence of Jared Crick could help this unit. The backers are bare, but RB Cody Glenn was moved there in the spring and I think it is just what the doctor ordered. He is a smart player with good speed and should challenge for conference honors. Phillip Dillard returns and the coaches are pleased with his work ethic in getting better. The secondary, led by cornerback Armando Murillo is decent with three returning starters. Again, Pelini has something to work with at this spot. Keep an eye on Latravis Washington, who is a player I think could shine under Pelini's scheme.

INTAGIBLES

Pelini has hired in a new strength coach and he is trimming the fat. A multitude of players have dropped several pounds and giving the ‘Huskers more speed and quickness. The defense was too big and slow a year ago, and it showed in person and on my couch down in the Sunshine State. Pelini will also return Nebraska to an attacking defense unlike the read as they go by mindset we saw a year ago, where Nebraska was second worst in getting turnovers. This will change under Pelini’s defensive style.

HONORS CANDIDATES
RB Marlon Lucky could be All America if he gets enough touches. Ganz is much better than most think but the Big XII is loaded with standout signal callers. Slauson and Murtha should be all conference while either Potter or Turner could as well.

NEW ARRIVALS

OT-DT Baker Steinkuhler was the top ranked incoming freshman but it does not appear he has made enough waves in fall camp to be a major factor. LB Will Compton is expected to get time while Alfonzo Dennard has impressed in the defensive backfield. John Levorson has come out of nowhere to contend for some playing time, certainly on special teams if nothing else. He seems salty.

FINAL ANALYSIS

There is talent on this squad and it will take Bo Pelini some time to get Nebraska back to the glory times. Since Pelini kept Shawn Watson on board to run the offense, a good move, the ‘Huskers will be quite potent. As the defense comes alive, the offense will be expected to carry the load, and it will. The schedule is in Nebraska’s favor and I could see 10 games in the win column. Even if Nebraska can rise up to take Missouri, they will likely drop one somewhere else. Games at Texas Tech and Oklahoma seem extremely difficult, while Missouri, Kansas, Virginia Tech and rising Colorado provide some stiff home dates. K-Sate will be on fire after getting torched for 73 by NU a year ago. It looks like 9-3 to me with road losses at TT and OU and one home to either Mizzou or Va. Tech. Go Big Red!

Biden Sounds Off

Joe Biden is right on target when discussing the qualifications of Barack Obama.

Even so, I think the selection of Biden by Obama was sound, given that Biden does carry with him experience on the foreign policy side.

Clearly, however, Obama is not qualified to lead this country at a time of war.

Without question, John McCain is. Even Biden thinks so!

Timing Is Everything

Slap me upside the head for subscribing to The Orlando Sentinel, but in reading the sports page this morning I came across a note that according to the Samford athletics department, Samford will play at Florida State in 2010.

Bobby Bowden, after his freshman year at Alabama, became a Little All America quarterback at Howard (now Samford) and began his coaching career there in 1959.

When Terry Bowden, coaching Salem College, took the job at Samford in 1987, quarterback Jimbo Fisher joined him at Samford for his senior campaign and was named Division III Player of the Year. Fisher, like Bobby, began his coaching career as an assistant under Terry at Samford before they went to Auburn together.
With all the Samford history going on, I wonder if during the game Bobby might coach the first half and turn the game and the program right on over to Jimbo for the second half?

The timing sounds about right! Go 'Noles

Home Equity Squeezed Tight

Alexis Glick (see previous post) of FOX Business interviews a few market players who discuss the issues surrounding the tightened environment of the day.

Banks horribly mismanaged their risks principally through the subprime lending mechanism. Now, while they repair their balance sheets, homeowners with credit previously extended to them are having these loans frozen or called.

In order for the economy to rebound, and don't think for one moment the residential real estate market is not principal in the recovery, the consumer will need bargaining power and lines of credit to work with. With the banks squeezing the consumers by raising credit card rates, freezing credit lines and tightening lending requirements, the consumer appears to be a deer in the headlights.

Banks mismanage risks and then pummel the consumer to help them heal. This extortionist tactic cannot be good news if you looking for a rebound in this consumer driven economy.

BAHL's Babes: Alexis Glick

After biding time at CNBC and over at the Today Show on NBC, FOX Business Channel wisely hired Alexis Glick as Vice President of Business News and Anchor of Money For Breakfast aired each weekday on FBC.

Prior to entering the television world, she was an executive director and ran floor operations at the NYSE for Morgan Stanley. She is a graduate of Columbia University, a mother of three sons, a real estate investor owning several properties and a former basketball star at the high school level or so I read. This is most impressive!

Regrettably, she does seem to be onboard the Obama express, and given her level of education and accomplishment, that is puzzling.

Anyhow, I may be listening to Kernen and gang at CNBC in the morning, but I am watching Money For Breakfast with Alexis Glick.

Brandon Warren to Rocky Top

Former Florida State Freshman All America Tight End Brandon Warren has been cleared to play for the Tennessee Volunteers this fall.

Warren asked for but was denied release after his freshman season at FSU as he hoped to head back home to be near his family and suit up for the Vols. Finally, the NCAA has signed off and Warren is eligible for Tennessee this fall.

"I have respect for the (FSU) program and stuff" Warren said. "I don’t really have too many bad feelings. I just wish they would have made the right decision." FSU has never publicly commented on why they would not release Warren.

Warren is a fabulous player, a playmaker at the tight end position that has NFL written all over him. He will have a strong immediate impact for the Vols. I wish he were still a 'Nole, and wish him the best of luck.

Soviets Should Stand Down

The events over last week with Russia entering and occupying (deadlines of their departure continue to expire) Georgia are particularly troubling, and I feel it is an early chapter in story of very serious impending military issues. Georgian President and US educated Mikheil Saakasvili has been a longtime friend and ally to the United States of America

Going back decades, any skirmish we have been involved in has prompted a cry from the left that we are in the mode of “war for oil”. This conflict, ladies and gentleman, is all about oil.

Russia, a country driven by commodities, has benefited nicely over the last several years as oil has strongly ascended. Vladimir Putin and company have stood steadfast with Iran, who they couple with to sell oil to the west, particularly Europe.

A competing pipeline called the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC), partially owned by British Petroleum, which just happens to go right through Georgia is set to undermine along with the South Caucasus pipeline the control Russia has over Europe by competing globally as a supplier from the Caspian Sea. Putin seized control of Russia's private oil companies by eliminating (yes, club mud) the CEO’s of the privately held oil firms and nationalizing most if not all of them. The poisoning of public critics took place also.

With oil prices, which were very extended, receding sharply, Russia envisioned double trouble for the nice income stream which they have developed. A scare issued to the Ukraine a couple years back, something about a power disruption, apparently did not spook the west enough.

With their backs against the wall, perceived US weakness with economic woes, altercations on two fronts amongst public discontent and a very weak new leader as the odds on favorite to become President, and with little ways to increase the Russian income streams elsewhere, Russia took the option of an eye opening strike against Georgia. As good of chess players as there are over there, this short term perceived victory and brushing off of western powers requests regarding retreat will likely backfire long term.
Former? Russian Presdient and KGB agent Vladimir Putin has become untrustworthy and has damaged his credibility

President Bush has bent over backwards in an effort to welcome Vladimir Putin and the Russians to the world table, with his commentary about seeing his soul as a steering mechanism to lead him. Unfortunately, when cash issues come calling, relationships often dismantle.

Russia offered that sides must be chosen, and alliances are emerging. Russia is with their financial partner Iran while the Ukraine, Georgia and Poland have signed on with Europe and the US.

It is the Russian alliance with Iran that is the major issue. While it may be financial at birth, when coupled with Iran failing to adhere to pressure to stop with it’s nuclear ambitions, this is most dangerous. As suspected, the rhetoric of Iran will likely leave Israel no choice but to engage Iran, and the Soviets should indeed stand down if such action takes place.

If not, it will likely forge even further resistance to Russia and Iran with new partnerships formed and global conflict that will not benefit anyone. As the Russian stock market continues to drop as current and potential investors rate the geopolitical costs as too high, Russia should remember that the US, even with all our issues, is a world financial juggernaught that can easily cripple global economies not withstanding the might of our Armed Forces.

A new Warsaw Pact? Sudetenland 1938? And the Global War on Terror. This is hardly time for a neophyte community organizer in my opinion. Someone familiar with the fire would be best! Georgian supporter and Republican Presdiential nominee John McCain (R-AZ) speaks to VFW in Orlando, Florida on August 18, 2008.

As always, your comments are welcomed and encouraged!

Seminoles Bowden Talks '08 with ESPN

Florida State Head Football Coach Bobby Bowden is interviewed on ESPN on the prospects of the 2008 season. I will have a preview of the 2008 Seminoles as we get closer to kickoff, but anything shy of an 8-4 season would be a major disappointment.

Will FSU reassert itself among the nations elite? In one of my favorite Bowden quotes,"I guess were fixin to find out".

No Obama

The 2008 Presidential election decision should be extremely clear to any sensible thinking individual by this point. I would think between the lack of international (or domestic for that matter) experience in the challenging geopolitical climate in which we live and the deplorable associations unmasking horrendous judgement, it would be crystal clear.

Then, there is the economic policies remniscent of the Carter Administration. As famed economist Arthur Laffer put it, the economic policies put forth by Obama are flawed. Fox Business Chief Neil Cavuto recently has Laffer on his show "Cavuto" to discuss the economic policies of the McCain and Obama campaigns.

Florida born Abigail Spencer began her career on ABC's All My Children and was most recently the star of the Lifetime Network show Angela's Eyes.
Look for her in the upcoming movie In My Sleep. Below is a scene from Angelas's Eyes, which was pretty good mystery show that did not quite make it.

Labonte Hits A Ton

2000 NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion Bobby Labonte takes a nasty lick at the Centurion Boats Bud at The Glen NASCAR race at Watkins Glen, NY on Sunday. Bobby thankfully has been released from the hospital and will be fine.

I do not know what exactly Robbie Loomis and crew need to do to the #43 Cheerios Dodge Charger, but please get my boy some horsepower so he does not find himself in the back of the pack racing among idiots. Ever notice it is not the Tony Stewarts and Jimmie Johnsons of this world involved in this stuff.

Hang in there Bobby. Take a Goody's Powder and do yourself a favor and skip the morning run tomorrow.

King Dollar

It looks a though the falling dollar has found a bottom and has reversed trend here by breaking out if its base it settled into back in March. The dollar will meet resistance here in 75-77 range
but should it break 78 on strong volume it will go much higher.
This is good news and will likely lead to other well received items such as lower oil barrel prices, which we have already seen. The price per barrel of oil should fall to around 109, which is likely a pit stop on the way to 100, where massive resistance is in place.

Let The Record Reflect

A few months back, The New York Times ran an above the fold front page story detailing a potential affair by John McCain, citing second and third person “reliable sources”. This allegation, with zero credible evidence produced, must be labeled false.

As the details began to surface from a National Enquirer report on an affair by lightweight John Edwards, complete with eyewitnesses and photographic evidence, virtually none of the news media would touch it. This is yet another example of media bias slapping you across the face.

Perhaps this was done out of respect for Edwards wife Elizabeth, who is fighting a serious battle with cancer, and certainly we wish her well in this fight. I have no use for the Edwards, and was aghast when shortly after announcing her cancer, Elizabeth Edwards was on the campaign stump throwing rhetoric at Edwards opponents. It is no doubt hard to respond by firing back at a woman who has just announced her cancer plight.

It took Edwards coming clean on ABC News Nightline for the news media to go with the story. And now, the fraud known as John Edwards is exposed for everyone to see.

One would certainly suspect his political career is over, but given the set of events as this admission became public, it seems to me the lying and political operations continue for Edwards. It is a wise idea to let fly any bad political information on a Friday in the hopes most folks will miss it with weekend activities going on. And with the Olympic Games starting, I guess Edwards thought this would be the best time, doing the least amount of damage to his political ambitions.

The National Enquirer has produced photos of Edwards and a child of Reille Hunter, with whom Edwards had the affair. Was Edwards holding his own baby? "I don't know if that picture is me," Edwards said. "It could well be. It looks like me. I don't know who that baby is. I have no idea what the picture is." Oh my!

Edwards antics are just cracking up the staff over at The Enquirer. David Perel, editor in chief at the Enquirer commented, "I think it's amazing, even as the man's coming clean, that he's continuing to lie," he said of Edwards. "Just as I've been saying for 10 months that he had an affair with Rielle Hunter, we know for a fact that is Rielle Hunter's baby and that is him holding the baby in the Beverly Hilton. He's not only hiding things from the public, he's hiding things from his wife."

Edwards will have a hard time with his timeline when these photos surface. Check them out at http://www.nationalenquirer.com/. It seems he is continuing to lie to everyone and also trying to take actions in order to do damage control to his political future (God help us if there is one).

News reports now suggest there is also a money trail situation that is emerging, with installment payments and homes being bought for Ms. Hunter in various states by friends and/or campaign staffers of Edwards.

Certainly, it looks like Edwards did have two Americas going on. More entertainment appears on the horizon.

2008 College Football Preview

IN THE TRENCHES

2008 Preseason Top 25

1. Georgia
The Dawgs feature an experienced quarterback and an elite running back coupled with a fast and experienced defensive unit. With a road game at Arizona State along with the rugged SEC slate, the schedule could derail the Dawgs championship quest.

2. Southern Cal
USC is the most talented team top to bottom and when they are focused they are real trouble for just about anyone. But they seem to sleepwalk a time or two each season, and with no proven top notch signal caller, the Trojans will fall just short.

3. Missouri

The Tigers have it all in front of them as Chase Daniel leads a veteran offensive unit which will put pressure on all opponents. The defensive unit will be improved and Mizzou seems hungry.

4. Oklahoma

OU is loaded offensively and has talent equal to anybody, particularly in the offensive line, but they are quickly developing a reputation of stumbling somewhere, and are lately getting blasted in bowl games.

5. Florida
The nations best offense behind Tim Tebow should light up the scoreboard, but the defensive unit may surrender quite a bit themselves. Can’t win the SEC with a weekly shootout, but it should be fun. If Tebow comes back in ’09, look out!

6. Ohio State
Although the Buckeyes are usually overrated, this team may not be with outstanding All America players on both sides of the ball. An early game versus USC is critical.

7. LSU
There is a tremendous amount of talent down here, particularly in the trenches. The quarterback position is a problem and should leave the Tigers unable to capture the SEC.

8. Clemson
A very dangerous team with an emerging signal caller and two of the nations best running backs, Clemson is just strong enough in the trenches on both sides of the ball to create some real problems for opponents. This team could be real nasty, or they could fail to capitalize on the talent and underachieve again. The opener vs. Alabama should give ups a glimpse.

9. West Virginia
Much of nucleus of the Mountaineers run of ’07 has departed, including the head coach. But, they have an outstanding quarterback returning along with a lightning fast tailback. Always a tough out, but not a title contender.

10. Texas
This program seems to be treading water since they won it all a few years back. The ‘Horns lack consistency and may not finish second in the Big 12 South.

11. Kansas
The Jayhawks run in ’07 was no fluke. They have skill people, are sound in the trenches and are very well coached. They won’t sneak up on anyone in ’08, but they are good anyhow. Early game vs. USF will be interesting.

12. Texas Tech
Lookout! If Tech is ever going to upseat the south big boys, this is the year. Graham Harrell is a stout passer and Tech has the nations best receiver in Crabtree. They will light it up. Can they stop the big boys when it counts? We will see.

13. Arizona State
ASU is another team coming on that is very well coached. They have offensive skill and are deceptively strong on D. Should be the PAC 10’s runner up; got Georgia early for springboard opportunity.

14. Wisconsin
They will try to dominate you up front and usually are quite successful at it. The well coached Badgers can win the league, but will likely fall short due to lack of overall talent.

15. Auburn
The Tigers have a fairly veteran squad but has inexperience at quarterback, not a good thing with a new system being implemented. The schedule is favorable, and Georgia comes to the plain late. Beat LSU early, and they got the west.

16. Florida State
The problems for the Seminoles begin and end by having average quarterbacking play. Should they get much better play from the incumbent or get it from a new man (Ponder),the ‘Noles could get on track offensively. Skill people will have to perform as the line is woefully thin. The defense is solid if they can stay off the field. The schedule is very favorable, so the ‘Noles bear watching.

17. Illinois
The Illini are a very stingy defensive unit, one which can win several games for the Zookers. Juice Williams returns at QB, but the schedule is unkind, starting with a neutral vs. Mizzou.

18. Oregon
The Quack Attack has been formidable for decades now and save a few unfortunate injuries, they could have a lot more to show for it. Again, the Quack is very talented and will pose problems in the PAC-10, especially at home. Too bad they visit USC and ASU.

19. Virginia Tech
Attrition has decimated the Hokies, including the injury bug. VT will have to come on quickly. The running back spot is bare, but the do have a good QB tandem. Game at Nebraska is of interest.

20. Tennessee
Phil Fulmer, almost out as Head Coach, got an extension just as he is about to put on the field a veteran team with a strong running attack. If the new QB does well, the Vols could be real dangerous as they are anchored by a strong defensive unit led by safety Eric Berry. UT opens at the Rose Bowl versus UCLA.

21. Nebraska
Bo Pelini returns to shore up the D, so expect this unit to be much better although the talent level is thin by Blackshirt standards. The balanced offense should be very potent and given that, this team will be much better than most folks think.

22. Wake Forest
The Deacons are no fluke and could be playing again on New Years Day. They have honors candidates on both sides of the ball. Wake likes being methodical offensively and they are an experienced team. Wake gets FSU on the road early and Clemson at home, so they cold win the ACC.

23. Brigham Young
The Cougars are bit thin on defense but the team seemed to be coming together late last year. BYU will score points, and with an improved D, could run the table if they can dump UCLA.

24. South Florida
It is hard to imagine the Bulls being this good but given the balance of this team and the speed the state of Florida produces, South Florida could well take the Big East. The Bulls are balanced on offense led by a solid quarterback and attacking on defense. Kansas in game 2 is big as is the finale at West Virginia.

25. Oklahoma State
The Cowboys got some things happening on offense and return their standout signal caller. If some other skill folks step up as expected, the Pokes will put points on the board. Improvement must come defensively for Oklahoma State to enter the Top 25. The Pokes showed signs statistically last year although the points allowed remained an issue. All but four games seem sure wins with OU in Stillwater to close.
