Two Tomahawks For Canton

On this day, two Florida State Seminoles were elected into the National Football League Hall of Fame.  This is a tremendous honor, bestowed on so few.

Walter Jones, a dominating offensive tackle from Aliceville, AL, left Florida State for a exemplary career with the Seattle Seahawks. Jones was a lean, mean dominating machine at left tackle, thwarting attacking defensive ends with authority.  Jones was a stalwart at perhaps the most important position, left tackle, integral in protecting the quarterback. Well deserved Mr. Jones!

Also from Florida State, a unique individual was also elected to the HOF; Derrick Brooks.  A member of The Hall of BAHL, I have a Tampa Bay jersey, and it is #55 with D. Brooks written on the back.  Brooks exemplified everything athletics is all about. Brooks is unique, having played HS (Pensacola Washington), College (Florida State) and Pro (Tampa Bay) all in the state of Florida.

Brooks is a member of the FSU Board of Trustees, and also does a tremendous amount of charity work through his Derrick Brooks Charities.  An outstanding faith based individual, Brooks is everything you could want your son to grow up to be.

A Shepherd Who Led The Flock

Glenn Beck tearfully reports Ken Hutcherson, who has stage four cancer, is in the last days of losing his fight to this insidious disease.  We are all losing, as Sean Hannity puts it; A Great American.

Although I never had the pleasure to meet Hutch, it seems many of us have known him for years.  Hutch, who emerged from a troubled childhood to play NFL football for the Dallas Cowboys, often joined Rush Limbaugh on his number one rated nationally syndicated radio show to discuss the NFL Playoffs.  It was always a hoot.

In this past year, meeting through David Barton, Pastor Hutcherson and Glenn Beck have become great friends; their friendship no doubt cemented on faith and their rising fears regarding the declineof our great nation.

During this time, through appearance on Beck's nationally syndicated radio show and The Blaze, we all learned a lot from Hutch.  Beck recognized Hutch spoke truths that needed to be heard, an so began a four part series on The Blaze, Beck's emerging television network. An episode on fatherhood was particularly insightful; a most significant message Hutch wanted to aim at young inner city youth.



Though few of us actually knew Hutch, through his relationships with Rush, and particularly Glenn Beck, many of us have had the honor to get to know Hutch, hear his message, and learn to become better servants of God in the process.

Something In The Air

The college football season has been tremendous this year, from outstanding Color & Pageantry to fantastic finishes.  There have been several Hail Mary touchdowns to win games, notably Nebraska taking down Northwestern in Lincoln, but nothing can compare to the Prayers In Jordan Hare, where Auburn used a miraculous reception and extremely rare return of a missed field goal, of 108 yards mind you, to win back to back games in the rugged Southeastern Conference.

 

Not to be outdone, the National Football League games on week fourteen were the most dramatic ever, with longstanding records having been broken in rapid pace. 

Matt Prater, a UCF product kicking for the Denver Broncos, broke the record for the longest field goal in NFL history, a 64 yarder.  Tom Dempsey, who kicked with club foot, set the record, which has been equaled twice since, in 1973 with the New Orleans Saints.

Among the records were the most fourth quarter lead changes and the most total touchdowns on a single day.  In the final 2:05, five scores took place exchanging the lead before Baltimore edged Minnesota with :09 left.  Miami had not won in Pittsburgh in decades, but as underdogs did so on this day. 

Barely.

The Steelers, took a page from the Cal-Berkley in the Big Game of 1982 by successfully navigating a series of laterals to score the winning touchdown, only to learn the player to hit paydirt stepped out unforced at the thirteen yard line.  The Dolphins win.
 

Let it snow.

 

Several games were played in a winter wonderland.  The dream of most every youngster, to play the game in field of covered snow, was played out on HD screens around the world for all to see.

 

Impacted games included the Minnesota Vikings at the Baltimore Ravens, the Kansas City Chiefs at the Washington Redskins, the Atlanta Falcons at the Green Bay Packers and the Miami Dolphins, pictured below, at the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Nothing can compare to the game at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia as the Philadelphia Eagles hosted the Detroit Lions.  The conditions during the game were incredible, a wild whiteout.

Having followed both the collegiate game (my favorite) and The National Football League from my earliest memory some 45 seasons ago, I cannot remember searching for the pigskin in such a winter wonderland.  The whiteout got the attention of the nation, deservedly having been the topic of conversation at public schools and water coolers across the fruited plain.

Sadly, the global warming enthusiasts, who failed to find themselves in front of HD television, or for heaven sakes, in the stands of one of these contests.  In fact, on the day following the snowstorms, the administration held it first annual White House Task Force on Climate Preparedness.

As reported on Jim Hoft's Gateway Pundit, "The task force was established to advise the Obama administration “on how the Federal Government can respond to the needs of communities nationwide that are dealing with the impacts of climate change,”

Perhaps they discussed sending some snow plows down to Dallas, who was blanketed over the weekend with ice and frigid temperatures.

Additionally, former Clinton chief of staff John Podesta, who was co founder of The Center for American Progress, has been brought in to help retrieve the sinking second term of President Obama.  Podesta will be tasked to help save Obamacare, which has turned into a catastrophe, and to, according to The Washington Post, "be broad and include climate change issues and executive actions."

The description by the Post is most troubling for those of us who see the real directive behind the actions take by our president.  Among those sounding an alarm is Rush Limbaugh, who nailed it in describing the objective of shredding the Constitution.

As such, it is important to note that global warming, or the newly defined global climate change, is not about weather.  These people have no idea if it is going to rain next Tuesday in their own back yard.  It is about governmental control, the transfer of wealth, and limitations on real property, restricting property rights under the global premise of social justice.

If it was about weather, we all could conclude given the NFL frolicking around in a winter wonderland over the weekend that the earth is not warming.  Certainly, the those pushing climate change regulatory action know it as well.

This weekend, there was something in the air.  In more ways then one.

The Rest of the Story

As an avid football fan, although I much prefer the collegiate game, I have never missed the Super Bowl, and this past Sunday was no exception. Although much of the country becomes immersed in watching and grading the commercials, this have never been more than a passing fancy for me, save the time my wife was featured in the local NBC affiliate commercial during the 1990 game.

This year, I found most were rather stupid, ineffective or downright offensive. I did like the Budweiser ad, and loved the NFL network ad featuring former Florida State star Deion Sanders. But far and away, the ad that I found most compelling was the ad for Dodge Trucks featuring longtime ABC Radio announcer Paul Harvey, a great American.

I am sure you found the ad as powerful as I did. Farmers are getting the backside slap in this country today in a variety of ways, from price fixing to regulatory action, including at local levels and property rights. Some sensible measures are being taken to protect farmers, including caps on rising property tax rates.

In this environment of government encroachment advancing along seemingly every avenue of approach, I have often said owning land outright, both improved and vacant, is the best protective measure of capital.  Farming is tough; not for the faint of heart.  And while the average age of the farmer is increasing, opportunities have been presented, and famed investor Jim Rogers is and has been most bullish on the sector.

Harvey and his commentary was a favorite of many an American in the last half century, seemingly part of the fabric of our nation as media outlets grew.  Harvey's daily commentary was syndicated to over 1200 radio outlets.  People took his messages of old fashioned common sense thought to heart.

While many became acquainted with Harvey is this most recent ad, Paul Harvey had many messages for the American citizens he loved so much.  One such message, presented in 1965, is prescient today.

Our country is in fact in peril.  The government is being run by individuals drunk on power, who are not honest brokers, who have little respect for the rule of law.  While many instances are small in significance, such as President Obama failing to present a budget in a timely manner or having the Senate fail to do so at all even though legally bound, the aggregate of these instances is significant.

Propaganda is rampant, as a complicit media is in fusion with an oppressive government allowing the political ruling class to enact laws without comprehending all the intended and unintended consequences.  Operating outside the Congress, with our government implementing the global transformation of wealth, inclusive of a reduction in liberty, and attacking the Constitution and religion, the government has flamed class warfare and has placed a record percentage of our citizens into dependency.

If I were the devil, and I wanted to rob the citzenry, who are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pusuit of Happiness, of their identity, I would be acting in concert with the actions of the progressive, ruling class leites that are running the country today.

Paul Harvey tried to wake America up.  Attributed to Davy Crockett but certainly spoken by Gerald Ford, "Remember that a government big enough to give you everything youwant is also big enough to take everything you have."

Don't think they won't, as history shows they will.  What say you?

49er Bayou

It is Super Bowl Sunday, and no, Alabama is not playing.

As the game approaches, we have been bombarded with stories about Baltimore Raven linebacker Ray Lewis, who is retiring. Lewis, who appears to have righted his ship after a very suspect past, is getting the full red carpet treatment from the media. I join the many, along with New England Patriot wide receiver Wes Welkers's girlfriend Anna Burns, who are among those not on board the Ray Lewis redemptive ride, and I have heard enough about Lewis to last a lifetime.

With apologies to many the fine folks associated with the Ravens, inclusive of former fellow Seminole Anquan Boldin and former 'Husker Sam Koch, I am going to be cheering for the San Francisco 49ers, where one of my all time favorite players, former 'Husker and 49er Tom Rathman, is currently their running backs coach.

Rathman, the pride of Grand Island who starred at Nebraska, was a tough hard nosed fullback during the 49er glory days, who also excelled at catching the ball out of the backfield. In fact, Rathman was joined in the 49er backfield for much of his career with another former 'Husker, Roger Craig. Rathman and Craig both used to place (HUSKERS) on their helmet bumpers until the NFL political correctness police banned such expression. Needless to say, I thought it was cool.

So call it 28-23 San Francisco, and let us hope we have heard the last of drama surrounding Ray Lewis. Sadly, I am sure he will turn up on a pregame show next year, which is a show I will be turning off.

Stiff Arm Obama

Due to an increasing amount of concussion injuries, most notably in the National Football League, the game itself as we know it is in increasing jeopardy. In fact, ball hawking Baltimore Raven safety Bernard Pollard recently queried the NFL won't exist in 30 years.

Man, Woman & Child, he may be right!

Recently, several high profile incidents, including the suicides of players and the violent outburst resulting in a murder suicide by a Kansas City Chief earlier this fall, have brought the violence of the game into question by liberals, elites who seek to govern your life and activities and lawyers seeking to profit over the misfortune of others. The lawsuits are coming.

There is little doubt the game of football, particularly at the professional level, is played very fast and the collisions can be very violent. In the years past, protective gear wore by the players was far from adequate to match the activity on the field. However, I don't recall anyone ever being forced to play, and I know many, including myself, who wish their talent level allowed them the opportunity to excel in college ball, much less the NFL

Although it did take some nudging, the NFL has made a commitment to research to help make the game we all cherish safer for everyone involved. In fact, Dean Sicking, architect of NASCAR's extremely successful safer barrier retaining walls, is now turning his attention to designing and elevating football helmet safety. Please hurry, for the greatest game is under attack.

The NFL officials are now penalizing players for hits to head, and in particular, tacklers leading with the headgear to the head, as are collegiate officials. As we have noted, the penalties have been inconsistent and have damaged the game, and a prime example came in the Big Ten Championship game between Nebraska and Wisconsin where 'Husker Kenny Bell laid intellectual wood.

Amidst the economic destruction and retraction of liberty and freedom under the failed policies under his leadership, the Commander in Arrogance has now found time to not only weigh in on the safety of the sport but to target non unionized college football, where the Color & Pageantry is a fabric of the nation.

President Obama the antithesis of Heisman quality.
 

Our President, who has been proudly presiding over an America in decline and stoking the fire of class warfare, should focus his time in creating jobs for the millions out of work and returning our nation to prosperity. Obama should not be operating from the thought that his input is needed or required on every subject that comes into the lexicon.

Although Obama claims to the contrary, he is not what would be considered a big time fan of any sport, as evidenced by struggling to name current players of his "beloved" Chicago White Sox when pressed.

While Obama did play on a basketball team as a youth, add sports governance to the list of areas where Obama thinks his thought process supersedes ours. The football field is the last place we need metro sexual elites in effort to implement their progressive policies of fairness and controlled outcomes.

Sports, and we can include cheerleading, provide opportunity for individuals, through competitiveness and sportsmanship, to form life long relationships, achieve goals and learn life lessons.

With all due respect Mr. President, keep your dreams of a socialist utopia at great length from the Color & Pageantry of College Football, and while we are at it, the roar of the engines of NASCAR as well. We don't need your policies and ideas to severely handicap yet another pair of billion dollar businesses.

Your input is not welcome, and should you try, we will attempt to stiff arm your recommendations, which as of this writing, is still legally permissable

Futuristic Football

The Omaha World Herald reports today that during a game next fall, Nebraska will wear a Adidas designed futuristic uniform, including a helmet variation. Traditionalist that I am, I am very much against Nebraska changing their helmet, and it is hard to imagine Dr. Tom Osborne signing off on this.

But, this is all the rage, and over at Lost Letterman, they recently previewed several new helmet designs by a gentleman named Charles Sollars. He is not only working on NCAA helmets, but the NFL as well. BroBible has more.

Some teams have great helmets, and among them are my Florida State Seminoles and Miami Dolphins. But some teams could use a makeover, and some of these designs are very cool.

Whoa Nelly, did I like the designs for Arkansas, Kansas, Illinois and the Tampa bay Buccaneers.





















Others I liked were Iowa State, Indiana, LSU and Miami.






















A few seasons ago, NIKE changed the Florida State uniforms for a game with Maryland. They uniforms were not bad, but did not come close to our normal uniforms, complete with our award winning helmet, named the best in college football. Pictured below is the helmet used in the aforementioned game, and a Sollars concept. These are not bad, but I say no thanks. Fear the Spear!











Nebraska has uniforms that are conservative and traditional, just the way I like it. Below are two designs of alternate helmets, both of which I am against.

There were several designs I did not care for, and again sticking with tradition, the new designs for the Red River Rivalry I thought were disappointing.











All in all, this is great fun as we finish up spring and get ready for the color and pageantry of fall, which will be here before you know it!

Indeed, show where your going without forgetting where your from.

Suh, whose first name means "House of Spears", came to The University of Nebraska from Portland, Oregon Grant High School in 2004. By maximizing his God given talent through hard work, discipline and perseverance, Suh left Nebraska, a football program rich in tradition and player honors, as perhaps the most decorated player to ever call himself a 'Husker.

After graduating from Nebraska, Suh was drafted as the second overall pick by the Detroit Lions and is now regarded as among the best players in the National Football League. Beyond football, Suh continues to lead by example, and has charted a path of charitable activity. First among his efforts was a most significant gift to The University of Nebraska, which helped him become a nominee for Sportsman of the Year by Sports Illustrated. Only 24 years old, Suh has already achieved monetary success most could only dream of, but his level of maturity in life far exceeds his age.

Unlike those who protest down on Wall Street, who want something for nothing, I celebrate the success of those who work hard, play within the rules and achieve greatness. Ndamukong Suh is such an individual, and I hope he can show many where they can go while not forgetting where they have been. It is the lessons of life. While we are facing stiff headwinds, mostly created by our own government, it is up to us to persevere and carpe diem.

Lead, follow or get out of the way. And Go Big Red!

The Right Decision

Many young men are coming face to face with the decision of a lifetime, one which will no doubt play a very significant role in their future. Although I don't usually like the decision, more often than not, the young men are making the right call.

Although I am a casual Major League Baseball fan, college football is my sport, a sport losing several potential All America type players to the hardball. In fact, it seems my teams, Florida State and Nebraska, were sent on a MLB caused coordinated slide.

It appears it all began when Nebraska signed a player from Houston Jefferson Davis to a national letter of intent, who was a first round MLB selection. Carl Crawford is now among the top players in Major League Baseball, moving this past year from the Tampa Bay Rays over to the Boston Red Sox. Heisman Trophy winner Chris Weinke, signed by Florida State out of Cretin-Derham Hall High School in St. Paul, MN, spent six years with the Toronto Blue Jays before returning to Florida State and winning the national championship and playing half a decade in the NFL. The Seminoles were stung again when three sport superstar Joe Mauer, remarkably out the same high school as Weinke, never enrolled at FSU, rather becoming the top player on the MLB diamond as a catcher with the hometown Minnesota Twins. While Weinke was never close to achieving the success of Crawford or Mauer on the diamond or in terms of financial compensation, he earned a nice financial foundation playing minor league ball, and post FSU in the NFL.

This year, another decision had to be made. Enter Bubba Starling, a top rated signal caller, who signed with Nebraska although he was certain to be a top draft pick in baseball. Starling was highlighted in a piece by Sports Illustrated earlier this spring. Take a look:



Like Mauer, Starling was selected by his hometown team, the Kansas City Royals, as the fifth pick in the draft. Football at the University of Nebraska or a big paycheck and a chance to play for years with the Royals, significantly lessening the chance of a career ending injury.

As you may suspect, although I think Starling really wanted to play pigskin with the Big Red, he signed on with the Kansas City Royals, reportedly signing a deal worth a guaranteed $7.5 million. Starling made the right decision no doubt. Most 'Huskers are also Royals fans, myself included, and the Royals future is bright as they have a fine young team that will no doubt be enhanced by the skills Starling possess. Starling will be joining Alex Gordon, the NCAA National Player of the Year as a senior baseballer at Nebraska in the Royals outfield.

Prime Time in the Canton Sky Line

The National Football League held its annual Hall of Fame Ceremony in Canton, Ohio last night, and among those inducted was Deion Sanders of Florida State University. It was nice to see former Seminole Defensive Coordinator Mickey Andrews in attendance. Sanders joins Fred Biletnikoff as the only Seminoles in the NFL HOF.

Without question, one of the most talented players I have ever seen, Deion was also known among those with a superior work ethic. Perhaps my favorite memory was on a rainy day up at Clemson, where prior to the world famous puntrooskie play, Deion stunned the home crowd returning a punt 76 yards for a touchdown.

Congratulations Deion! Great speech. Job well done!

Storied Franchises In Super Bowl

I don't have a dog in this hunt as I am not for or against either the Green Bay Packers or the Pittsburgh Steelers. I will be watching. My prediction is Packer running back Brandon Jackson has the game of his life, and not withstanding the 9 tackle 2 sack performance by Steeler standout Lawrence Timmons, Green Bay wins 27-23.

Big Day Looming For Big Suh

Former Nebraska All America defensive tackle Ndamuknong Suh, who won every college football award he was eligible for except The Heisman Trophy, stops by the FOX Business studios to visit Varney & Co. Host Stuart Varney, Charles Payne and Tracey Byrnes discuss the financial pitfalls many athletes face and a new contract for Suh with Subway Restaurants.



At the Nebaraska spring game last Saturday, Ndamukong Suh announced a donation of 2.6 million dollars to the University of Nebraska.



All Cornhuskers across the country are very proud of Ndamuknong Suh and his accomplishments and wish him the very best. While the St. Louis Rams may need a quarterback with the first pick in this weekends NFL draft, the best player in college football last fall was you know who; Ndamukong Suh.

Former 'Husker Walk-on A Super Saint

The University of Nebraska has a very storied football program and is the fourth among wins all time. In the modern era, since 1970, they are easily the winningest team and holders of five national championships.

The Cornhuskers are also known for having a unique and passionate fan base, including the record for consecutive sellouts which went over 300 this past fall. Another interesting tidbit about Nebraska is their walk-on program. While scholarship recruits are the lifeline of major college programs, Nebraska utilizes the walk-on program for kids around the state and country to show up and if they can become successful, later earn a scholarship to play for the Big Red. The walk-on program is the heart and soul of the Cornhusker program.

Over the years, several walk-on players have achieved all conference honors and some, including Derrie Nelson, Jimmy Williams, Jared Tomich and Jarvis Redwine, have earned All America Honors. Others have had lengthy NFL career, including Toby Williams, John Parella and Adam Treu. There are some former walk-ons currently in the NFL, including Kyle Larson, Stewart Bradley and Scott Shanle, who will start at linebacker in the Super Bowl today for the New Orleans Saints. I applaud these players for their hard work in achieving their goals.

Although Indianapolis has a 'Husker on the roster in Cody Glenn, I will be pulling for the Saints who have offensive tackle Carl Nicks in addition to Shanle. There are no Seminoles on the Super bowl rosters.

And although I am a big fan of Peyton Manning, who is among the best to ever play, I am down on the Colts for pulling their players late in the season to protect from injury, notably Manning and tight end Dallas Clark, and costing me my fantasy league championship.

I have no doubt Manning and the Colts will put up points, but I think New Orleans will also. In support of the 'Husker walk-on program and the outstanding scenery in the Superdome, I'll take New Orleans, 35-31 in one for the ages.

The Debate Is Over

The debate is in fact over with respect to global warming, now referred to as climate change due to overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

How about a check of the weather a few recent football games:

Those arriving at the Konica Minolta Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, FL found 45 degree temperatures and rain.

The Autozone (AZO:NYSE) Liberty Bowl in Memphis kicked off late Saturday afternoon with temps at 22 degrees. Eddie Money looks comfortable during halftime:



As the NFL kicked off Sunday afternoon, longtime Tampa Bay Buccaneer radio man Gene Deckerhoff announced the 44 degree temps was the coldest daytime home kickoff in Tampa Bay history.

When the 76th annual FedEx Orange Bowl in Miami kicked off last night with the thermometer at 48 degrees, it became the coldest Orange Bowl in history.

Orlando set a record cold last night at 28 degrees, and the entire country is buried in snow.

The left wing alarmists need to find a new scare tactic, because the greatest hoax of all time is in the deep freeze.

NFL's Elusive Leon Washington Sidelined

Former Florida State Seminole and current New York Jet star Leon Washington suffered a broken leg against the Oakland Raiders on Sunday. It was not pretty:


Here is hoping for a full and speedy recovery for Washington, who has made quite a name for himself as one of the top kick returners in the league in addition to being a complete back with equal running and pass catching skills. Get well soon!

Prime Time In The Daytime

Former Florida State All American Deion Sanders brings a youth group to Tallahassee to visit with some old friends, including Coach Bowden and Coach Andrews.



In all my years associated with college football, Sanders is probably the best player I have ever seen. Johnny Rodgers, Barry Sanders, Tommie Frazier and Charlie Ward are among the others.

Along with his career in the National Football League, Sanders also excelled in Major League Baseball. He is the only athlete to ever play in a World Series and the Super Bowl.

Conservative Patriot Kemp Throws Last Pass

Supply side conservative and NFL All Star quarterback Jack Kemp has unfortunately passed away due to the insidious disease of cancer.

Although I never met him, I always appreciated him and his story. Kemp was cut several times and traveled a lengthy road en route to his legendary football career, never giving up and persevering. He was league MVP while with the Buffalo Bills of the AFL.

Kemp was also part of the Reagan Revolution, co-authoring the Reagan tax cuts which ignited the greatest bull market in history. By all accounts, he was a neat guy.







An American conservative patriot, Kemp will be sorely missed. Maybe Ronnie will have a beer waiting for him. Meanwhile, Cancer must be stopped and you can help by visiting HERE.

CNBC's Larry Kudlow, who knew Kemp for some 35 years from their days working under Reagan, penned a wonderful column on Kemps contributions. Kudlow also got together with Art Laffer and Robert Rahn, former Reagan economic advisers, and former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich, to remember Jack Kemp. It is worth your time:

For the second time in as many weeks, there is an addition to BAHL's Babes that was not originally on the list, and that is the lovely Angie Harmon.

Angie began her career as a model but is most known for her role on NBC's Law & Order. She is married to former USC Trojan and New York Giant Jason Sehorn and has three children.

Angie has been in the news recently for stating accurately that you can be at odds with the policies of President Barack Obama without being a racist. That someone felt compelled to comment on what should be obvious demonstrates where this country is on the Obama love train, including the credibility and ratings plummeting mainstream news media.












Harmon is finding "that if you say anything against him you're called a racist,", and she is annoyed at having to defend herself on this, as she should be. Another item on the list of grievances Harmon has is the double standard presented by the main stream media. "I think one of the greatest things about the Republican Party is the understanding, we don’t point fingers and we have class." Harmon is a open GOP member and was a strong supporter of John McCain in the 2008 election.

So in summary we have a beautiful, talented actress, active member of the GOP, college and NFL football fan, a risk taker by taking on Obama from Hollywood and a fan of NASCAR. No doubt, that rises above the qualifications and Angie Harmon is a BAHL's Babe.

Preserve the Dolphin history

In honor of the 1972 Miami Dophins, like most of the country, I will be hoping and praying the New York football Giants can defeat the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl XLII.

It seems fitting to think of Larry Csonka on this day, since during his NFL career he played for two teams; the Fins and the Giants.
